Background

I have worked on both sides of the table.

I spent roughly a decade on the lending side at a community development financial institution serving small businesses across the Rocky Mountain West, in roles from director through chief operating officer, helping the organization grow and scale along the way. In that time I analyzed hundreds of businesses from a lender's perspective. I read the plans, the projections, and the financing requests, and sat in the credit meetings where the decisions got made. I saw which businesses were approved and which were not, and learned that the difference was frequently not the quality of the business itself.

Before that I worked inside small businesses, in finance and operations roles where the estimate, the schedule, and the cash all had to line up, and where a bad decision showed up in the bank account a quarter later.

The practice today

I hold active CPA licenses in Idaho and Montana and have been a CPA for more than ten years. Tablerock now works in two ways: business tax preparation for a limited number of owners, and a financial assessment for owners who want to understand what is driving their numbers. What I actually do

What I like most about this work is figuring out what makes a particular business different from every other one that looks like it on paper. Almost every business does something better than its competitors. Often the owner is too close to it to name it, and the financials are not organized in a way that shows it. Finding that strength and then building around it is more useful than applying a generic set of best practices.

Outside the work

I live in Boise with my family. Dirt bikes, golf, hunting, and as much time outdoors as the calendar allows.
