Where this comes from
Both my parents owned small businesses.
I grew up in a blue-collar Pennsylvania town watching what it actually costs to run one. Not the version in a business book. The version where the numbers are a source of stress rather than a tool, and where nobody in the owner's life can look at them and say what they mean.
That is the gap I have spent my career on either side of, and it is the reason Tablerock exists.
Background
A decade deciding who got financed, and years inside the businesses applying.
I spent roughly ten years at a community development financial institution serving small businesses across the Rocky Mountain West, in roles from Director of Asset Management through Chief Operating Officer. I underwrote and managed loans across thirteen states. I sat in the credit meetings. I read the files that got approved and the files that did not, and I learned that the difference was frequently not the quality of the business.
Before that, I was Director of Finance and Estimating at a design-build construction firm, which meant job costing, estimating, cash flow, and payroll for a business where a bad bid shows up in the bank account a quarter later. Earlier than that, I did the work with my hands.
I hold an active CPA license, an MBA from Penn State, and a B.S. in Physics from Shippensburg. I completed the Wharton CHRO program and serve on the board of the CDFI Coalition.
Why the combination matters
Tablerock is led by Ben Wright, CPA, with controller and accounting support assembled around each client's needs.
Plenty of people understand financial statements. Fewer have sat on the lending side and watched how a business is actually judged from the outside. Fewer still have run finance inside a company where the estimate, the schedule, and the cash all have to line up. The overlap of those three is narrow, and it is the entire basis of how I work.
Outside the work
I live in Boise with my family. Dirt bikes, golf, hunting, and as much time outdoors as the calendar allows.
